OUR GIRLS

We have 89+ laying hens. This was a project that turned into a small business. My daughter K and I originally wanted two chickens. One for each of us, like pets. My hubby, B fussed about this at first, mainly because we have four inside cats, but before we knew it he was on the internet surfing the web and looking for places to purchase new born chicks.

This led to us building pens....next thing we knew a friend had three hens that she wanted to go to a good home, so we took them. There had been an old dog pen in our back yard so my daughter K and I fixed it up. The friend also gave us the coop and the wire they had. When we went to get them, I, F, had to crawl on my belly and grab these poor three hens who were scared to death, and hand them out to go inside a big cat carrier. Got them home and put them in their new pen with the make-shift coop I had made.  A few days later we took down, brought home and rebuilt their new coop. About a week later hubby found a man who had chickens for sale, so about 40 miles we go, bring home two Buffs, two young White Leghorns, a very young part Ameraucana (Violet)and a baby Ameraucana(Fluffy). The baby was for K and we were all praying that Violet and Fluffy would be hens. We kept Violet and Fluffy inside in a big pen until they were older.

At 6 am one morning we had to go to the post office and pick up two small boxes about 70 day old baby chicks. .... and yes, they too had to stay in the house until they were older because it was very early spring and still cold out. SO...can you imagine that many chicks in my guest bed room????I won't even go there because I am still cleaning in there.   (to be continued)
